Wind Power, Advantages and Disadvantages

Power from Wind Turbines - Zeeshan Amin |
The concept of harnessing wind energy is not new; wind power was used in ancient Greek, Chinese and Persian civilizations for sailing ships, milling grains and pumping water. However, the current scope of wind power is not restricted to such plain tasks.
Rather, it has taken the shape of a fast-growing renewable energy resource. Although it is not a viable substitute for fossil fuels, yet it is renewable and pollution-free. Moreover, the technology is simple to construct and maintain.
How to Harness Wind Energy
Wind power is the energy stored in wind gusts. The device used for harnessing this energy is called a wind turbine. The wind turbine consists of specifically designed blades mounted on a rotor. As the wind blows, the wind turbine blades move in order to rotate the rotor shaft. The rotor shaft is coupled with the generator shaft, thus converting kinetic energy of wind into electricity.
